Blighted
A story driven turn-based RPG with timed action
Summary
This page is about my personal video game side project. I will update this page once in a while to keep it up to date.
If you're interested in frequent updates, I will create dev logs on here in a while, stay tuned! For now, you can visit my project repository where I'll hold a temporary blog of the latest additions to the game.
The current map of Blighted
Haros is the world where the story of Blighted unfolds. I've been using Inkarnate to create it, I've mostly worked on the right side of the map as it's where the story begins. Check the latest version of the map here.
Story introduction
This story unfolds in the world of Haros, where fate intertwines the lives of three characters: Alan, Ametryne, and Dune.
One day, a meteor crashes into Kòvar's mountain ranges, harboring an enormous gemstone known as the Core, which radiates a strange energy.
Soon after, the Blight emerges—an insatiable corruption that spreads relentlessly, taking control of the minds of the living and growing ever stronger as it devours all it touches.
Alan, Ametryne, and Dune will become the Wielders of the Corrupted Weapons: a sword, a bow, and a pair of metal gauntlets, each emanating a strange and corrupted energy. With these weapons, our heroes hold the key to destroy the Blight.
But will they prove worthy of this immense power ?
Can they overcome the demons of their past, or will they fall victim to the Corrupted Weapons' seductive power ?
Frequently Asked Questions
Blighted is a 2D story driven RPG. In this game there are three main characters that the player gets to play. It's main mechanics are turn based fights, timed actions and a different skill tree for each character.
The game is about the Blight, an ever spreading corruption that is taking over the world by controlling affected peoples' mind. The three main characters come into possession of special weapons that are tied to the Blight's origins. The story is centered around the characters overcoming their trauma and getting to trust each other in a crumbling world.
Blighted is the result of my passion for indie video games. I've always looked forward to seeing the creators' personalities reflected in their games. When I finish playing a game that I'd consider a masterpiece, I often feel a kind of emptiness because that one game made me forget about daily inconveniences. Then I realised that's what I want to create: a game that could help players forget their problems and just have a good time.
At first, I had no clue what I wanted the game to be about, so I asked my best friend if they'd be willing to work on it with me, and they were thrilled. Although they aren't involved in game development at all, they are studying literature and storytelling. Their knowledge has been incredibly helpful to me, especially as I have no experience in that area.
We began meeting weekly, brainstorming what we wanted the game to be about, sharing our inspirations, and discussing how to move forward. Of course, being inexperienced at the start, we made some mistakes along the way. For instance, we began writing the story without fully fleshing out the lore, timeline, or an overall narrative structure.
As we learned from our missteps, we became more organized in our approach. We created a comprehensive document to capture everything related to the game, including a script with an outline of the story and spreadsheets for character and enemy stats.
It took some time, but the game design is in a good state now. As for the development, this is my first large-scale project in Unity, and I've had to refactor much of my code as I've progressed.
Working on Blighted has taught me a great deal about Unity and object-oriented programming in C#. I've decided to transfer the code to Godot, an open-source game engine that supports C#. I've enjoyed using Unity over the years, but I'm excited to learn Godot and take advantage of its open-source benefits.
Development is currently on hold while I focus on the game design and narrative. Once the game reaches a more advanced stage, I plan to hire someone to handle the graphics and music. For now, I'm using free assets from itch.io and handmade sprites.
I can't say for sure. I'll update this section once I have a better idea of what's left to do to create a demo.
